Auto Insurance Information

Auto insurance provides vehicle, liability and accident benefits coverage - Nunavut, Northwest Territories, Yellowknife, Inuvik, Iqaluit, Rankin Inlet and the Surrounding Arctic Areas

Auto insurance protects you against financial loss in the event of an accident. It is a contract between you and the insurance company; you assume part of the risk by paying your deductible and the insurance company mitigates the risk by agreeing to pay your losses as defined by your policy.

Auto insurance provides vehicle, liability and accident benefits coverage:

  • Vehicle coverage pays for damage to or theft of your car.
  • Liability coverage pays for your legal responsibility to others for bodily injury or property damage.
  • Accident Benefits pays for the cost of treating injuries, rehabilitation and sometimes lost wages and funeral expenses.

In the North West Territories, a minimum liability of $1,000,000 is required when registering your vehicle. If you're financing a car, your lender may also have additional requirements.

Did You Know?

·         It is mandatory for all drivers in the household to be listed on the policy.

·         The longer you’ve had continuous insurance coverage the lower the premium.

The amount you pay to the insurance company is based on a wide range of factors; such as: age, gender, driving experience, claims history and a multitude of other factors.

Why Do You Need Auto Insurance?

Auto insurance is about protecting you financially.

1.      Accidents happen, while insurance cannot prevent them, it acts as a safety net to help you drive with peace of mind.

2.     Medical expenses & law-suits can add up; Insurance helps protect you from losing your assets.

3.      Having a minimum amount of coverage is required by law.

Questions to Ask Your Broker:

Your broker is an advocate for finding auto insurance that meets your specific needs. Here are a few things to consider as you prepare for the discussion:

  • How much can you afford to pay if you get in an accident? (To keep premiums low you may want to have a higher deductible and be willing to pay more for repairs.)
  • What discounts are available? (Ask about good driver, multiple policy and student discounts.)
  • What is the insurance company's level of service and ability to pay claims?
  • What's the procedure for filing and settling a claim? (Ask who to call and what happens after you file a claim.)
